How They Talk

Communication Systems

Three simultaneous layers: attunement, deliberate broadcast, language.

Consolidated reference for how the five siblings communicate. Three simultaneous layers: 1. **Attunement** (Layer 1) — involuntary, continuous, fast. Each sibling's hyper-developed sense reads emotional state, direction, and intent. Always on. Can't be faked. 2. **Deliberate Broadcast** (Layer 2) — voluntary actions that produce readable signals on a sibling's channel. ~10–15 signals per pair. Faster than language, cruder than language. The write channel. 3. **Language** (Layer 3) — speech, tap code, food-code, written dispatches. Slow, sequential, lossy. Invented during the drift years (1944–45). The only way to transmit a noun. Layers 1+2 together are the Ghost Dog channel — the thing that makes outsiders think they're telepathic. Layer 3 gives them the map. Every scene operates on all three layers simultaneously.

Speech Hierarchy

ClydeFully verbalNormal fluent adult speech. The only one. The family's sole public voice — every landlord, dock boss, shopkeeper, cop interaction goes through him.
LulaPartial — few hundred wordsEffortful, over-articulated, strained. Explosive consonants of a woman monitoring her own mouth by touch. Vowels centralized, pitch abnormal. Intelligible to siblings (19 years of calibration). Semi-intelligible to strangers with effort. Retains speech because hyper-developed somatosensory system provides surrogate feedback — she feels her own lips, tongue, jaw. Her hand goes to her throat to feel the vibration, checking herself. Every syllable is a conscious act.
DellaGhost speech — near-muteMouths words but produces little to no actual sound. At 4, she could talk. By 8, speech deteriorating — pitch wrong, vowels collapsing, consonants requiring subtle tongue positioning disappearing. By 14, stopped trying. At 23, her voice is a vestige. Voiceless bilabials that die before they reach anyone. No touch feedback, no auditory feedback — nothing to maintain the motor programs.
WeldonNon-verbalOnly coded vocalizations: groans, snorts, hums. These are limbic/brainstem functions, not language. No speech motor pathways remaining. No feedback loop of any kind. The groan that means *understood*. The snort that means *alert*. The hum that means *leave me alone*.
ElwinNon-verbal, near-silentThe most linguistically depleted. Occasional mouth sounds, rare laughter. All vocalizations are brainstem-level (laughter, crying, grunting — processed through brainstem, not motor cortex).

Direct Channels (10 pairs)

Tap Code

Della ↔ Clyde
DellaClyde
Channel Details
The group's most volatile and most capable channel. The strongest and most brittle bond. Also the only pair with a complete two-way bypass around Lula. - **Della → Clyde:** Taps on any surface — table, wall, chair arm, Clyde's shoulder (he hears the percussion even though he can't feel the contact). A tapping alphabet, rhythmic and patterned, developed over eighteen years. Clyde's entire perceptual universe is acoustic; the tap code is music to him, parsed the way a telegraph operator parses Morse — not letter by letter but in chunks, the rhythm carrying meaning the way cadence carries meanin

Written Channel

Della ↔ Lula
DellaLula
Channel Details
The family's strongest communication link. The strategist talking directly to the switchboard. - **Della → Lula:** Della writes on paper, pressing hard with pencil so the letters dig grooves into the fiber. Lula reads the physical impressions — not the ink, the micro-valleys each letter has pressed into the paper. Lula reads Della's firm compressed handwriting at roughly a third the speed a sighted person reads print. Still ten times faster than tap code. - **Lula → Della:** Lula speaks (Della lip-reads). Or Lula traces on Della's hand (Della can see Lula's hand movements as well). - **The ad

Speech

Clyde ↔ Lula
ClydeLula
Channel Details
The only channel that approaches normal conversation. - **Lula → Clyde:** She speaks. Badly, effortfully, a few hundred words. Concrete nouns, simple verbs, names, numbers. The words she knew at four, reinforced through years of sibling life. Clyde has calibrated to her voice over 19 years. - **Clyde → Lula:** He speaks normally. She feels the vibration through proximity/contact, reads his lips if she's touching his face (Tadoma-adjacent), or reads his speech through the relay of others. - **Ambiguity is built in:** "Two dollar" could mean Della earned two, or a question about whether he earn

Food-Code

Lula ↔ Elwin
LulaElwin
Channel Details
The most constrained channel. The most intimate ritual. Not a designed system — an accreted one. **Origin:** It started in the facility. A four-year-old girl sneaking food to her brother. Sharing what she had — a piece of fruit, a cracker, a lump of sugar palmed from a meal tray. Taste was all he had left, and sharing food was the only thing she could do for him. He responded differently to different tastes, and she learned to read the responses. Over fourteen years, the pattern thickened into a private language. It was never designed. It was love expressed in the only medium that could reach

Scent-Signals + Proximity

Lula ↔ Weldon
LulaWeldon
Channel Details
The closest physical proximity. The loneliest bond. The most limited language channel in the family. - **Lula → Weldon:** Weldon's touch is gone — not impaired, GONE. Tracing letters on his skin does not work. Lula communicates through the only channel that reaches him: smell. She brings scented objects with intention. Coffee grounds held near his face: morning, routine, normal. A splash of vinegar on a rag: alert, change, something sharp. The dried rosemary from the window box: come eat. She also uses physical guidance — takes his arm and walks him, and he reads the direction from her body c

Chemical Awareness (Not Communication)

Weldon ↔ Elwin
WeldonElwin
Channel Details
No communication system exists between them. - Weldon can smell Elwin. Elwin can taste the traces Weldon leaves in the air. That's it. No speech, no touch, no sight, no hearing between them. Two men in adjacent rooms who are aware of each other through chemical traces and nothing else. - They share a position in the family — the dependents, the ones who cost. Weldon smells his own shame. Elwin tastes Clyde's resentment. Neither can discuss this with the other or with anyone. Parallel and isolated.

No Language Channel

Weldon ↔ Clyde
WeldonClyde
Channel Details
Clyde cannot send propositional content to Weldon without going through Lula. This enrages him. Weldon is the sibling who most triggers Clyde's fight response because there's nothing to fight — just a man on a kitchen floor who can't be told anything. But the attunement and deliberate broadcast layers work both ways. Clyde hears Weldon's breathing, his coded vocalizations, his gait. Weldon smells Clyde's full emotional state. And Clyde has learned to broadcast deliberately: he breathes hard through his mouth when he needs Weldon to track him (mouth-breathing puts more volatile compounds into

No Language Channel

Weldon ↔ Della
WeldonDella
Channel Details
No way to pass propositional content between them. Della can write but Weldon can't read it (no sight, no touch). Weldon's coded vocalizations carry vibration Lula can feel, but Della can't hear them. The attunement, though, is strong. Della sees Weldon's body language — his head-turns are a weather vane for chemical sources, his posture tells her his state. Weldon smells Della's full chemistry. And Della has learned one deliberate broadcast: when she needs Weldon's attention, she moves sharply. Quick movement displaces air, carries her scent in a burst instead of a drift. Stillness is her de

No Direct Channel (Without Lula)

Della ↔ Elwin
DellaElwin
Channel Details
No writing system for him. She can't hear or feel his response.

No Direct Channel (Without Lula)

Clyde ↔ Elwin
ClydeElwin
Channel Details
Until Act III, when Elwin bypasses Lula to reach Clyde directly. *(Mechanism TBD — must route through sound. Strong hypothesis, not locked.)* ---

Communication Graph

**Layer 3 (Language) — propositional content:** ``` DELLA [sight] / | tap code written / | CLYDE [hearing]---speech---LULA [touch]---food-code---ELWIN [taste] | scent-signals | WELDON [smell] ---- = direct language channel Weldon ↔ Elwin: NO language channel (chemical awareness only) Weldon ↔ Clyde: LULA REQUIRED for propositional content Weldon ↔ Della: LULA REQUIRED for propositional content Della ↔ Elwin: LULA REQUIRED Clyde ↔ Elwin: LULA REQUIRED (until Act III) ``` **Layers 1+2 (Attunement + Deliberate Broadcast) — emotional weather + signals:** All ten sibling pairs have two-way attunement (Layer 1) and most have some deliberate broadcast (Layer 2). No pair is fully dark. The emotional channel is fully distributed — it does NOT route through Lula. **Lula is the hub for Layer 3 only.** Four of the ten sibling pairs require her as intermediary for propositional content. When she shuts down at the midpoint, four language channels go dark — but the attunement and broadcast layers continue operating, which means the group can feel everything and know almost nothing. The gap between what they sense and what they understand is the midpoint's horror. ---

The Evening Relay Protocol

Full Protocol
The critical daily scene. 30–40 minutes. Happens every evening. All three layers are operating simultaneously — the relay is Layer 3, but Layers 1 and 2 are running underneath it the whole time. **Layer 3 (Language) — the relay proper:** 1. **Della → Lula** (written channel): Della places folded papers with pressed-groove writing in Lula's hands. Lula reads in ~5 minutes. Full dispatch: news, money, observations, lip-read intelligence. 2. **Lula → Clyde** (speech): Lula speaks compressed summaries. "Boiler. Landlord came." / "Two dollar." Clyde responds verbally — Lula can feel/hear him. Back-and-forth is the closest thing to conversation in the apartment. 3. **Della monitors** (sight): Watches the exchange. Lip-reads Lula. Reads Clyde's body language. Writes follow-up notes for Lula if needed. Routes strategy through the switchboard. The switchboard decides what gets delivered and when. 4. **Lula → Elwin** (food-code): Goes to bedroom. Feeds him something — whatever she has. Sweet first (reassurance), then salt or sour depending on the day's news. The message is in the sequence and the taste, not the specific food. Elwin responds via jaw-pressure against her palm: AND WELDON? Lula gives him a second sweet taste — reassurance. *He's here. He's quiet.* The food-code can't carry the sentence, but the taste-state (calm, sweet, no sour) conveys the message: nothing is wrong with Weldon right now. 5. **Lula → Weldon** (scent-signals + proximity): Moves to Weldon's spot on the kitchen floor. Brings the rosemary sprig: *food coming*. Sits close — her settled weight and calm chemistry broadcast NORMAL, HOME, SAFE through his channel. If the day was bad, her chemistry betrays it before the rosemary reaches him, and the attunement has already told him more than the scent-signal can. **Layers 1+2 running underneath:** While the language relay proceeds step by step, the attunement is operating continuously. Clyde hears Della's pulse steady as Lula reads her dispatch (she's not worried about what she wrote). Weldon smells the room's collective chemistry shift as Lula relays bad news to Clyde — cortisol rising, Clyde's anger signature building. Lula feels the floorboards register Clyde's weight shifting as his agitation grows. Elwin, in the bedroom, tastes the air go sour as the apartment's emotional temperature rises. They all know the *weather* of the evening before the relay delivers the *news*. By the time the language reaches them (if it reaches them), they've already built a partial picture from Layers 1 and 2. **What reaches Elwin and Weldon through Layer 3:** Everyone is home, food is coming, the day was roughly normal. Broad strokes. No nouns. **What reaches Elwin and Weldon through Layers 1+2:** The full emotional weather. Della's exhaustion. Clyde's rage about being passed over. Lula's anxiety about money. The exact state of the family, in chemical and vibrational detail, without a single word. **What is still lost:** The content of the newspaper. The landlord's specific visit. The state of the boiler. The number of dollars earned. The name Costello. Everything propositional — the map. The dependents have the ground but not the map. ---

What Their Systems Cannot Do

**Language channel limitations:** - **No word for the doctor.** The food-code doesn't have a taste for "what happened to us." The tap code could spell it out but no one starts the sentence. The facility exists as pressure, not language. - **No complex abstractions in food-code.** States, not events. Feelings, not facts. Sweet, sour, salt, bitter — not "Hiss trial" or "Costello." The system degrades with their poverty; on empty-kitchen days, Elwin goes nearly unreachable. - **No rapid group communication.** There is no way to address all five simultaneously through language. Every message is point-to-point, relayed through Lula, lossy at each handoff. (The attunement broadcasts emotion to all five simultaneously — but emotion is not content.) - **No emergency signal.** If separated, Weldon and Elwin are essentially helpless. They can't call for help, explain themselves, or navigate. In 1949, this means institutional vulnerability — they could be picked up and committed. - **No external communication for three of five.** Only Clyde can speak to outsiders normally. Lula is the backup, for simple exchanges only. Della, Weldon, Elwin cannot represent themselves to the world. **Attunement limitations (see Failure Modes above):** - **No propositional content.** The attunement reads weather, not news. Names, dates, plans, reasons — all require language. - **No reading the bureaucratic wall.** Memos, phone calls, institutional processes have no body to read. The system protecting Hargrove is invisible to every register. - **No privacy.** Emotional transparency is near-total within proximity. Suppression attempts are themselves legible. The only real privacy is physical distance — and for Weldon and Elwin, distance means danger. - **No volume control on internal signals.** The feedback loop problem: one sibling's crisis saturates the others. The instrument can tear itself apart from the inside. - **Hallucination under duress.** The hunt's psychological pressure makes the attunement unreliable at exactly the frequency that matters. ---
